About Nicaragua

Legend has it that, just as the Mexicans were guided by the spirits of the people to the great Tenetchitlan, the Aztecs traveled to the south of their empire and settled between the two volcanoes following the signs disposed by their gods. This place was the island of Ometepe, in the middle of Lake Nicaragua, formerly know as he Lake Cocibolca. The first know settlers included the Nicaro Indians, whose name comes from that of Chief Nicaragua, who lived in the Rivas region. They used the same Aztec calender and wrote their laws, rites, etc. in hieroglyphics in black and red ink on strips of deer hide.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leon is a second largest city in Nicaragua.  Leon is located at 12.430 North, 86.890 West, in Central America. In Spanish Colonial times, the name was Santiago de los Caballeros de Leon, but is not used in modern times. As of 2006, the city had an estimated population of about 374,000 people.  The most populated city is Managua(1.5 million), then Leon, followed by Granada at 190,000.

Leon is situated on the Rio Chiquito River, some 50 miles northwest of Managua, and some 11 miles north of the Pacific Ocean coast. Although less populous than Managua, Leon has long been the intellectual center of the nation, with the university founded here in 1813. Leon is also an important industrial and commercial center for Nicaragua.
