High Voltage Power Supply Complete
The upgrade of electrical service to North American standards is going well. Over 85 new concrete poles have been erected covering many miles of farmland to carry electricity to the coast. This section of concrete poles attaches to the 3 phase municipal line on the Salinas Town Main road. To finalize this phase in 2011, we are restringing these poles and the new 85+ poles with new insulators and wire. This will take 25,000 volts to the mid island, which is ample for a hundred homes. This is a privately funded and owned power line for the use of our clients and the clients of our 2 neighbours. Union Fenosa will not connect any others without our consent.
Electricity supplied by the power company(Union Fenosa) is called the utility in many countries. Electricity is measured in terms of voltage and current. Using the analogy of water supply, voltage is analogous to pressure, and current is analogous to flow. Voltage is measured in Volts (V). Current is measured in Amperes (A). Power is Voltage multiplied by current, measured in Watts (W) or thousands of watts, kilowatts (kW). One kW is equivalent to 1.34 horsepower.
The 25,000 volts will be reduced by several transformers on the island to 110 volts in each home. The individual residences will be offered a battery backup system and a backup generator system. The road paving and power in Nicaragua is a priority for the current government and we should look forward to improvements in both areas. |
